Start by fixing the muhurat. The pandit checks the home, the family members' rashis and the panchang to suggest a date and time. Book the pandit at least a week or two ahead.
The house should be clean, with a toran and rangoli ready at the main door. At the pooja spot you will need a chowki, kalash, mango leaves, coconut, roli, akshat, flowers, dhoop-deep, panchamrit and havan samagri. Ask the pandit for the full list in advance.
By tradition the head of the household and family enter at the auspicious time, right foot first. Boiling milk in the new kitchen is another old custom of the entry.
When booking, also settle who brings the samagri, how long the pooja will take and how many people will attend.
