What Is Mangal Dosh? Manglik Dosha Houses, Cancellation and Remedies

Heard the word manglik and got worried? Here is what Mangal Dosh really means, when it is considered cancelled, and the traditional remedies families follow.

Mangal Dosh, also called Manglik Dosha, is a condition in a birth chart (kundli) where Mars, known as Mangal, sits in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house counted from the Lagna (ascendant). Many South Indian traditions also count the 2nd house. It is read mainly in the context of marriage, which is why the question comes up the moment a family starts looking at matches.

The reassuring part is that Mangal Dosh is common, not rare. Mars only has to fall in 5 of the 12 houses, so a large share of kundlis show it. In many charts it is also considered cancelled, which is called parihar, by other factors.

What does Mangal Dosh mean?

In Jyotish, Mars stands for energy, courage, drive and temper. When it influences the houses linked to marriage and home, the traditional view is that it can bring intensity or haste into the relationship, so compatibility deserves a careful look.

That is the main reason families match kundlis before a wedding. Being manglik says nothing about whether a person is good or bad. It is one combination in the chart, and it should always be read together with the rest of the kundli.

Which houses cause Mangal Dosh?

In North Indian practice, these five houses are checked:

  • 1st house (Lagna): temperament, personality and manner of speaking.
  • 4th house: home, comfort and the family atmosphere.
  • 7th house: spouse and partnership, usually treated as the most important.
  • 8th house: sudden changes and the stability of married life.
  • 12th house: expenses, sleep and marital comfort.

Many astrologers check this not only from the Lagna but also from the Moon chart (Chandra kundli) and from Venus. If Mars falls in these houses from all three points, the dosh is considered strong. If it shows from only one, it is considered mild, and some people call this anshik manglik, meaning partial manglik.

How do you check Mangal Dosh in a kundli?

You need the exact date of birth, the exact time of birth and the place of birth. A small error in the time can change the Lagna, and once the Lagna shifts, the house that Mars occupies shifts too. So don't fully trust a chart made from a guessed birth time.

  1. Get your janam kundli made by a pandit or through a reliable app.
  2. In the Lagna chart, see which house Mars sits in.
  3. Check the same thing in the Chandra (Moon) chart.
  4. Finally, look for any cancellation conditions before drawing a conclusion.

When is Mangal Dosh considered cancelled?

Jyotish texts and family traditions describe several cancellation (parihar) conditions. These are the ones discussed most often:

  • Both partners are manglik: when both the bride and the groom have Mangal Dosh, it is generally treated as balanced.
  • Mars in its own or exalted sign: Mars in Aries or Scorpio, or exalted in Capricorn, is seen by many astrologers as weakening the dosh.
  • Jupiter's influence: if Jupiter aspects Mars or sits with it, the effect is considered softened.
  • A similar placement in the partner's chart: if the partner has Saturn, Rahu or Ketu in the same houses, many traditions consider it balanced.
  • Age: a popular belief holds that the effect reduces after the age of 28, though not every astrologer accepts this.

What are the traditional remedies for Mangal Dosh?

Families who want to do something about Mangal Dosh usually follow practices like these:

  • Reading the Hanuman Chalisa or Sunderkand on Tuesdays.
  • Keeping the Tuesday fast (Mangalvar vrat).
  • Chanting the Mangal mantra "Om Am Angarakaya Namah".
  • Donating red lentils (masoor dal), jaggery or red cloth on Tuesdays.
  • Having a Mangal Shanti or Navgraha Shanti puja done by a qualified pandit.
  • In some families, a symbolic Kumbh Vivah or Peepal Vivah before the wedding.

The Mangalnath temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, is well known for Mangal puja, and many people travel there to have it done. All of these are faith-based practices. Do them with devotion, but don't treat any single remedy as a guarantee of a particular outcome.

Should you be worried about Mangal Dosh?

Not at all. Mangal Dosh is one part of the chart. For a good marriage, guna milan, understanding between the two families, temperament and mutual respect matter far more.

If a match is stuck only because one person is manglik, first confirm whether the dosh is really present or whether it is cancelled. Then look at both charts together. The Achman app also has a free 36-point gun milan (kundli matching), which shows both charts side by side.

Frequently asked questions

Is being manglik considered unlucky?

No. Being manglik is not a sign of bad luck. It is a common combination that appears in many kundlis, and Jyotish treats it as one point to check during marriage matching. In many charts it is also cancelled by other factors.

Can a manglik person marry a non-manglik person?

Yes, many such marriages take place. If the dosh is cancelled in one chart, or the partner's chart has Saturn, Rahu or Ketu in the same houses, many astrologers consider it balanced. Have both full kundlis read together by an experienced pandit before deciding.

Does Mangal Dosh end after the age of 28?

A popular belief says the effect of Mangal Dosh reduces a lot after 28. However, not every text or astrologer follows this rule. It is better to look at the whole kundli than to rely on age alone.

What does anshik (partial) manglik mean?

When the dosh shows from only one of the three reference points (Lagna, Moon or Venus), or Mars is weak, many astrologers call it anshik or mild manglik. The effect is considered smaller in such cases. The exact term and its rules vary from one astrologer to another.

How do I find out if I am manglik?

Make your kundli with your date, exact time and place of birth, and check whether Mars sits in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. Repeat the check from the Moon chart. Many kundli apps show this analysis automatically, and a pandit can read the full chart for more detail.
