Wedding Rituals

Book a Pandit for Your Wedding

Vivah sanskar is considered the most important of the sixteen Hindu sanskaras: with the sacred fire as witness, the bride and groom take vows to stand by each other for life. It includes rituals such as Ganesh puja, kanyadaan, the pheras and saptapadi, which an experienced pandit conducts according to the family's tradition.

What the Wedding Rituals includes

  1. Ganesh puja and mandap puja
  2. Kanyadaan
  3. Gathbandhan (tying the knot) and panigrahan
  4. Agni sthapana and havan
  5. The pheras and saptapadi
  6. Sindoor daan and mangalsutra
  7. Blessings from the elders

When to do it — the muhurat

The wedding muhurat is worked out from both the bride's and groom's kundlis, looking at the tithi, nakshatra, lagna and whether Jupiter and Venus are visible rather than combust. Weddings are generally not held in Kharmas or Chaturmas, and many families begin the season after Devuthani Ekadashi. Demand for pandits is high in the wedding season, so book as soon as the date is fixed.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Hindu wedding ceremony take?

The main vivah sanskar, including the pheras, usually takes 2 to 4 hours. Earlier rituals like haldi, tilak or mandap need separate time, depending on each family's tradition.

How many pheras are there in a Hindu wedding?

Most traditions have seven pheras around the fire and the seven vows of saptapadi. Some communities follow a different number or order, so tell your pandit about your family's custom in advance.

Is kundli matching necessary before a wedding?

Many families do a 36-point kundli matching before fixing a match, and both kundlis are also used to set the muhurat. Whether to do it depends entirely on the family's faith and tradition.

Can the pandit follow our regional wedding customs?

Wedding rituals vary a lot by region and community. On Achman you can see each pandit's experience and languages on their profile, which makes it easier to choose one who knows your language and tradition.
