Rudrabhishek Puja Vidhi: Abhishek Items, Samagri and When to Do It

Planning a Rudrabhishek in Sawan or on any Monday? Which abhishek item carries which prayer, the full samagri, the order of the vidhi, and home versus temple.

Rudrabhishek is a form of Shiva worship in which a continuous stream of water, milk, panchamrit or another offering is poured over a Shivling while Rudra mantras are chanted. In North India the text used is usually the Rudrashtadhyayi. It is considered most auspicious on Mondays, on Pradosh, through the month of Shravan (Sawan) and on Mahashivratri, and when a pandit does it at home it usually takes one and a half to three hours.

What is Rudrabhishek?

"Rudra" is a name of Lord Shiva and "abhishek" means a ritual bath. Bathing the Shivling while reciting the Rudrashtadhyayi, which is drawn from the Shukla Yajurveda, is called Rudrabhishek. In South India a similar puja is done with the chanting of Sri Rudram, also known as Namakam and Chamakam.

Shiva is believed to be pleased quickly by abhishek. That is why people arrange a Rudrabhishek for peace in the family, as a prayer for good health, for graha shanti or for a specific wish. It comes in smaller and larger forms depending on how many times the text is recited, from a single Rudri path to the eleven-fold Ekadash Rudra and even bigger anushthans.

Which abhishek items are used, and what do they signify?

Tradition links different offerings, called dravya, with different prayers. Popular belief commonly holds:

  • Plain water or Gangajal: for peace of mind and purity. This is the simplest abhishek and is always acceptable.
  • Cow's milk: as a prayer for family well-being and good health.
  • Curd (dahi): for wishes related to home, land and stability.
  • Ghee: for the growth of the family line and for vitality.
  • Honey: for sweetness in life and relief from troubles.
  • Panchamrit: a mix of milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar, considered good for every wish.
  • Sugarcane juice (ganne ka ras): for prosperity and Lakshmi's blessings.
  • Water with kusha grass: offered with a prayer for release from hardship.

When should Rudrabhishek be done?

  • Monday: Shiva's day, so any Monday works.
  • Pradosh: the evening of Trayodashi, the 13th lunar day of each fortnight, is special for Shiva puja.
  • Sawan: the whole month of Shravan, especially the Sawan Mondays.
  • Mahashivratri and Masik Shivratri: the biggest Shiva night of the year, and the Krishna Chaturdashi of every month.
  • Special occasions: many families also arrange a Rudrabhishek on birthdays, at a griha pravesh or before a new beginning.

For a sakaam Rudrabhishek, meaning one done for a specific wish, many pandits check "Shiv Vaas", which is where Shiva is said to reside on that tithi. This check is usually skipped in Sawan, on Shivratri and at a jyotirlinga. Ask your pandit about it before you fix a date.

Rudrabhishek samagri list

  • A Shivling: for home, a parthiv (clay) Shivling, a Narmadeshwar or a metal one
  • A vessel for abhishek: a shringi, lota or kalash (copper is usually not used for milk)
  • Water, Gangajal, milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar and sugarcane juice, depending on what you choose
  • Bel patra (three-leaf and unbroken), dhatura, aak flowers and shami leaves
  • White flowers, chandan, bhasma (sacred ash), akshat, janeu and mauli
  • Dhoop, a diya, ghee, camphor and incense sticks
  • Fruit, sweets, paan, supari, cloves and cardamom
  • Roli, a coconut and mango leaves for Ganesh puja and the kalash

Keep in mind that tulsi leaves, ketaki flowers and haldi are traditionally not offered on a Shivling.

What is the vidhi of Rudrabhishek?

The details vary with the pandit and the tradition, but the broad order is:

  1. Bathe, wear clean clothes and set up the Shivling in a clean spot. Traditionally the jaladhari, the spout of the base, faces north.
  2. The pandit performs aachman, purification and the sankalp.
  3. Ganesh puja and kalash sthapana follow, with navgraha puja if planned.
  4. Shiva is meditated upon and invoked (dhyan and avahan).
  5. The abhishek is done in a continuous stream while the Rudrashtadhyayi is recited, for the number of paths decided in advance.
  6. After a final bath with clean water, the Shivling is adorned with chandan, bhasma, bel patra, flowers and cloth.
  7. Dhoop, deep and naivedya are offered, followed by the aarti "Om Jai Shiv Omkara".
  8. Finally, a half parikrama (circumambulation) of the Shivling is done, because the jaladhari is not crossed.

Should you do Rudrabhishek at home or at a temple?

Both are accepted in tradition. The difference lies in convenience and setting:

  • At home: the whole family can sit and take part comfortably, the timing is your choice, and the puja is done with your own family sankalp. If a parthiv Shivling is used, it is respectfully immersed after the puja.
  • At a temple: you get a consecrated Shivling and the temple atmosphere, but in Sawan and on Shivratri the crowds can make a long path difficult. Every temple also has its own rules.

For a home Rudrabhishek, keep enough space for the pandit and the family to sit, and decide in advance where the abhishek water will go.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do Rudrabhishek at home by myself?

Yes, anyone can do a simple abhishek with water or milk while chanting "Om Namah Shivaya". A full Rudrabhishek with the complete Rudrashtadhyayi is usually done by a trained pandit, because correct pronunciation of the Vedic mantras is considered important.

How long does a Rudrabhishek take?

A home Rudrabhishek with one Rudri path usually takes one and a half to three hours. If more paths are planned, such as an Ekadash Rudra, or a havan and navgraha puja are added, it takes longer. Ask your pandit for an estimate in advance.

What is the best day for Rudrabhishek?

Mondays, Pradosh, the month of Sawan, Mahashivratri and Masik Shivratri are considered the most auspicious. For a Rudrabhishek done for a specific wish, many pandits also check Shiv Vaas. Consult your pandit before fixing the date.

What is the difference between Rudrabhishek and Jalabhishek?

Jalabhishek is simply offering water on a Shivling with devotion, which anyone can do daily. Rudrabhishek is a full puja with sankalp, Ganesh puja and a continuous abhishek while Rudra mantras are recited. The devotion behind both is the same; the difference is in the method and scale.

Does Rudrabhishek have to be done with milk?

No. A Rudrabhishek with plain water or Gangajal is considered complete. Milk, curd, honey, panchamrit or sugarcane juice are chosen according to tradition and the wish behind the puja. When using milk, a brass, silver or steel vessel is preferred over copper.
