Satyanarayan Katha is the puja and vrat katha (sacred story) of Lord Vishnu in his Satyanarayan form. It is usually done on Purnima (the full moon) or on a happy occasion such as a griha pravesh, a wedding, a birthday or the start of new work. With the puja, the five chapters of the katha, aarti and prasad, it generally takes 2 to 3 hours, and the prasad always includes panjiri, panchamrit, bananas and tulsi leaves.
When should Satyanarayan Katha be done?
There is no strict rule, and the katha can be done with faith on any auspicious day. These are the most popular occasions:
- Purnima every month, considered the best day for it.
- Ekadashi or Sankranti.
- Griha pravesh, after a wedding or after the birth of a child.
- A new business, a new job or when a wish has been fulfilled.
- Birthdays and wedding anniversaries.
Many families prefer the evening, especially on Purnima, so that everyone can share the prasad together afterwards. It is a good idea to confirm the day and time with your pandit first.

- The navgraha and other deities are invoked and worshipped.
- Lord Satyanarayan is worshipped with bath, cloth, chandan, flowers, tulsi, dhoop, deep and naivedya (food offering).
- The five chapters of the katha are read. Many families blow a conch or call out a jaikara at the end of each chapter.
- Some families add a short havan after the katha.
- The aarti "Om Jai Lakshmi Ramana" is sung.
- Bhog is offered to the Lord and prasad is shared with everyone.
The five chapters of Satyanarayan Katha in brief
Chapter 1
Seeing people suffer on earth, Narad Muni asks Lord Vishnu for a simple way out. The Lord tells him about the Satyanarayan vrat and puja, to be done with faith and truthfulness.
Chapter 2
A poor Brahmin of Kashi named Shatanand is taught the vrat by the Lord, who appears as an old Brahmin, and his life turns around. A woodcutter who sees this also begins doing the puja.
Chapter 3
A merchant named Sadhu sees King Ulkamukh doing the puja and vows to do it if he is blessed with a child. His daughter Kalavati is born, yet he keeps putting the puja off. Later he is falsely accused of theft in King Chandraketu's kingdom and imprisoned, and he is freed only after his wife Lilavati and Kalavati keep the vrat at home.
Chapter 4
On the way home, the merchant lies to the Lord, who comes as an ascetic, saying his boat holds only leaves and creepers, and the cargo really does turn into leaves. When he apologises, everything is restored. Then Kalavati, in a hurry to meet her husband, runs off without taking prasad and his boat sinks; it returns only after she goes back and accepts the prasad.
Chapter 5
King Tungadhwaj refuses the prasad offered by cowherds in a forest and suffers heavy losses. He admits his mistake, does the puja with the cowherds himself, and what he lost is restored. The message of the whole katha is simple: respect truth, and never disregard prasad.
How do you make panjiri and panchamrit for the prasad?
For panjiri, roast wheat flour in ghee on a low flame until it turns light golden and smells nutty. Once it cools, mix in powdered sugar or bura. Many homes make dhaniya (coriander) panjiri instead, often with makhana, dried coconut and dry fruits.
For panchamrit, mix milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar, and add tulsi leaves on top. For Satyanarayan puja, many families also add small pieces of banana.
How long does Satyanarayan Katha take?
Leaving aside the preparation, the puja and katha usually take 2 to 3 hours. If a havan is added or the navgraha puja is done in detail, it can take a little longer. Many people who keep the vrat eat nothing until the katha is over and break the fast with prasad.
If you want the katha done at home, you can book an experienced, verified pandit through the Achman app. Look at the pandit's profile, experience and languages before choosing, and settle in advance who will bring which samagri.
