The five limbs of the Panchang: tithi, vaar, nakshatra, yoga and karan

Why the Panchang is consulted before any auspicious work, and what each of its five limbs tells you.

Panchang means five limbs. It is the Hindu almanac that records the astronomical state of each day, and auspicious muhurats are worked out from it.

Tithi comes from the angular distance between the Moon and Sun, with 30 tithis in a lunar month. Vaar is the weekday. Nakshatra is the one of the 27 lunar mansions the Moon occupies that day.

Yoga is one of 27 combinations arising from the motion of the Sun and Moon, and karan is half of a tithi. Rahukaal and Abhijit muhurat are also checked daily.

In the Achman app's Panchang you can see today's tithi, nakshatra, sunrise and sunset and the good and bad timings at a glance. Timings vary slightly by location.
